Last Monday, 21 September, saw the marking of the second European Action Day Against Islamophobia and Religious Intolerance, an initiative launched by NGOs together with the Council of Europe in 2014, within the framework of the No Hate Speech Movement.

The Forum of European Muslim Youth and Student Organisations (FEMYSO) calls on European Institutions, political leaders of European countries and decision makers at national and local level to take urgent action to tackle the rising wave of Islamophobia that is affecting the lives of European citizens.

The panel examined the nature of women’s political participation in the Middle East and North Africa amid the rising prominence of Islam in political discourse. In particular, the speakers discussed developments in Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt and explored how the shifting political and social norms in these countries may affect women’s prospects for political participation. The panellists also considered the political participation of European Muslim women.
