ZAKĀT

“FEMYSO qualifies for Zakāt donation”

Numerous Muslim scholars have confirmed that Zakat is payable to organisations that exist to serve the Muslim community by protecting their rights. This is because the work done by FEMYSO (and other such organisations) can be classified as fi-sabilillah, which is one of the eight categories of Zakat recipients detailed in the Quran (Chapter 9, Verse 60).

Ever since it was established in 1996, FEMYSO has been dedicated to defend and protect Muslim rights at the highest institutional levels. The organisation continues to invest in developing young Muslims across Europe so they are capable and empowered to lead the advocacy work on local and national levels defending the rights of Muslims and those oppressed. Over the years, FEMYSO has helped establish and maintain many grassroots Muslim Youth organisations across Europe. The mission and the cause of FEMYSO qualify the organisation, according to many scholars and qualified Islamic jurists, to be eligible for zakat.

Differences do exist on this issue. Since Zakat is an individual obligation and each person must dispense of it in a way they believe is appropriate, we encourage you to seek counsel from scholars you trust as to how your Zakat should be spent, should you have any questions.
